Laptop Display Not Working/Laptop Screen not coming on

Sometimes laptop screen doesn’t work or laptop screen is blank.

If the laptop monitor has black screen then first of all you need to check if the laptop is able to power on or not.

To check this press the CAPs lock key on the keyboard. Does the CAPs lock LED lit? If yes then the system is running.

Another observation which might help to know if the laptop is running or not is to listen to the noise in the system. Generally when you power on your computer you would have heard different type of noises and the noise from the hard drive and the system fan is more prevalent. So check for noise from these components. Hard Drive noise is prevalent in case of desktop computers.

This will make sure that the system is up and running.

Now we know the display not coming in laptop is No Video. This could be due to two reasons, either the video card has gone bad or the laptop LCD back light has gone. To check this connect external monitor to your laptop computer and toggle the display to external monitor. Generally you need to press a key in unison with Fn key (Ex. Fn+F8) on the keyboard to toggle the display.

Laptop screen not working but external monitor does, which is the case many times, then the LCD is gone and laptop LCD screen repair is imminent. If external monitor is on but display not coming even on external monitor then the black screen issue is with the video card and therefore needs to be replaced.

Garbled/Distorted Display

This laptop no screen display problem could be either due to Laptop Screen or the graphics card and our first step is to check with an external monitor. Laptop screen not working but external monitor does then the display problem could be with the graphic card drivers. To confirm the same start your system in BIOS mode. Generally you need to press F2/F12 to enter BIOS mode. You need to press F2/F12 key the moment you power on the system. If the display is fine then issue is with the video card drivers.

Reinstall Video Card Drivers

You need to reinstall the graphics card drivers. You can reinstall graphics card drivers from the drivers CD which you may have received with the system or download drivers from the laptop manufacturer sites. Some times you are not sure which video card is installed in your system. In that case click start, type devmgmt.msc in search/run box. This will open device manager window. You can check the device type under “Display adapters” here.

There might be cases when Windows may have installed default video card drive in the absence of the correct video card drivers. In that case you can visit the manufacturers site which provides software to know complete configuration of your system.

  1. my laptop screen is black and I only use external monitor. how do I fix this problem?

    1. If I understand correctly then display is working fine in the external monitor but not on LCD screen. It seems that LCD is no longer working. If laptop is under warranty then please contact manufacturer for replacement else you may opt for out of warranty repair.

  2. please my laptop screen has gone blank what do I do to restore it back please help me

    1. 1) Unplug the power, remove your laptop’s battery, hold power the button for approx. 30 secs, turn on computer with power plug only (if it comes on), then shutdown, add battery and restart.
      2) Did you check display on external monitor?
      3) Does the screen works in BIOS mode?
